Google Play Still At the TopGoogle Play, the app marketplace for Google App’s, is currently boasting 45% more downloads than that of its competitor, Apple iOS app store. Despite this, apple continues to be “comfortably ahead” with worldwide revenue, according to a report that came out this morning, conducted by App Annie.
The Q1 2014 Market Index report included data from 150 countries, and examined apps from Google Play and the iOS app store. The report does not include the Amazon app store, which is currently more popular amongst android developers than Google’s marketplace.
The volume of Android app downloads is currently growing, as a result of explosive growth in emerging markets, including Mexico (up by 75%), Turkey (down by 9%), Brazil, Russia, and more. The report showed that established markets like the U.S. And the U.K. Are continuing to narrow the revenue gap.
Google Play’s revenue grew by roughly 55% quarter-over-quarter, surpassing South Korea and reaching second place in the market index last year. It is now number three, after Japan and the United States.
The United Kingdom also contributed to revenue growth, having gained 35% quarter-over-quarter, after growing almost 55% from Q3 to Q4 in 2013.
The iOS app store growth is largely in part due to China and the U.S., though some smaller markets, including Vietnam and South Africa, are also showing gains. Apple completed a deal earlier this year to bring the iPhone to China Mobile, which is China’s largest carrier (they have over 700 million subscribers).
Currently, games account for over 75% of app store revenue. Games continue to dominate, being the top revenue for app growth.
Other popular revenue drivers on app stores include messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, as well as news and magazine apps, tool apps, anti virus apps, and more.
